Freebass are an English band consisting of two( sometimes three!!!)  bassists and a vocalist with Guitar and drums added

The idea to form a band centralised around three bass players came out on a drunken night and was started by Hook and Mani as "a reaction because our groups New Order and Primals had been stalled".In 2006 the band recorded the theme song for the Channel 4 Radio program, an instrumental track called "The Tower".

In a 2006 interview with Argentine newspaper Página/12, Peter Hook expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the band, "We've already written 17 tracks and [the album]'s coming along very well. We hope to finish it soon." He also explained why he was so determined to succeed. "The reason we decided to do it was because everyone laughed in our face when we suggested the idea. So we thought, 'Fuck them! We're gonna show them.'"

The band and music has evolved greatly since its inception as lots of guitars have been added to each track and there is perhaps less bass than everyone is expecting ! .

The band members have also moved in different directions with Andy moving to New York , Mani being ever busy with his Primal Scream, Hooky becoming a respected author and new club owner and Gary starting another new band ( Strays )  meaning that finishing the album has been a long process.

GARY ''MANI'' MOUNFIELD

As bass Guitarist with the legendary kings of the Manchester music scene of the Eighties and Nineties, The Stone Roses, Mani and friends set about re-defining and re-shaping the face of British Music.
Their marriage of independent Rock and the funky beats of hip hop and emerging house music from the USA was edgy, risky and totally unique for the times, who could forgot the legendary 1st Stone Roses album an all time classic and the wonderful and fresh sound of Fools Gold the record that gave white Indie boys the funk !!! Truly ground breaking stuff and still appearing in the top 5 albums of opinion polls of the last 20 years .
After the Roses split, Mani was asked to join up with Scottish Rock Legends Primal Scream, already stars in their own right after the groundbreaking album Screamadelica, this was a home from home from the start. Recording Vanishing Point, Echo Deck, Exterminator, Evil Heat, Riot City Blues, beautiful future and Dirty Hits Compilation in a 12 year period has seen him enter the busiest and most productive period of his life.
Mani has also been DJing for 12 years, his DJ set's are classed as ''Eclectic, veering from Classic Indie /Alternative anthems, Old School Manchester Classics, Hip Hop, Acid, House and funky dance tunes"

PETER 'HOOKY' HOOK
The pioneering sounds of the highly influential English bands Joy Division and New Order were dominated by the droning basslines of Peter Hook.
In the late '70s, Hook's ominous bass enabled Joy Division to carve portraits of profound despair. Although the late Ian Curtis' harrowing lyrics and downcast vocals are often credited for Joy Division's bleak beauty, many of the group's songs were driven by Hook's sinister, throbbing bass. While badly tuned guitars were the rage during the punk era in late-'70s England, Hook's bass playing instilled the importance of rhythm in punk rock, helping to inspire a generation of dance-oriented new wave bands.
After Ian Curtis hanged himself on May 18, 1980, Hook joined the other surviving members of Joy Division in New Order. In 1990, Hook released One True Passion with his side project Revenge. Collaborating with Dave Hicks (guitar, keyboards) and Chris Jones (keyboards), Hook combined elements of techno and hard rock with Revenge; Hook also sang. Hook recorded one more LP with Revenge, 1992's Gun World Porn, before returning to New Order on their 1993 album Republic.
With New Order on hiatus, Hook teamed up with vocalist David Potts and released Music for Pleasure as Monaco in 1997. The album startled fans and critics with its well-crafted pop; the track "What Do You Want from Me?" even became a hit in clubs and on alternative radio stations. Monaco split up after label indifference temporarily shelved their self-titled second album; Monaco was finally released in 2000 and Hook rejoined New Order.
Hooky has recently published a book 'How Not To Run A Club' about the trials and tribulations of the infamous Manchester club The Hacienda and has opened a night club in the old Factory Records offices, The Factory.

GARY BRIGGS
I crash landed in Manchester in the summer of 1999 straight behind enemy lines, I say this with a smirk, as being an Arsenal Fan barging through throngs of United fans boasting about doing the treble that very night was a bit much to take. I came here ( Manchester) for the music, the city of music, thats what Manchester always was and always will be for me.
I didnt come alone, me and three of my closest mates moved here to track down Joe Moss (ex Smiths manager) who we had met while he visited a village in Cornwall I was occupying at the time. Suffice to say we found him and he was good enough to let all four of us kip in his attic. He put us in touch with Johnny Marr and the two of them were instrumental in helping us sign our first record deal and record Between the Senses as the band Haven.
Four years and two albums later Haven hit the skids and I was looking for something else to do. I'd got to know Mani quite well over the years I'd been in Manchester and he mentioned the Freebass project he was working on might need a permanent singer, I know they had tried a few but had not really got going or clicked.I was on the train back from the smoke after seeing Led Zeppelin at the o2 when I got the call from Hooky saying Mani had put my name forward. After a brief interrogation from Peter, he said he'd had a listen to some  Haven tracks, he explained what  Mani and Andy and himself were planning to do and that they  thought we should give it a go and see what happens.
The sessions were sporadic at first as all of us had time tied up in other things, Mani the Scream, myself Strays and Hooky his book etc but after a long evolution the songs have transformed into what is now 'its a beautiful life' and will hopefully have a beautiful future
